Our Story
Three generations of cedar on the Shuswap.
From a single-species mill built in 1984 to a 40-year family business — here’s who we are, the wood we work, and how we stand behind it.
Family-owned since 1984
A mill that has only ever cut cedar.
North Enderby Timber was raised beside the Shuswap River just outside Enderby, in a valley where log driving once floated timber down to the town’s sawmills. For 40 years we’ve focused on one species — Western Red Cedar — and on doing it well: sourcing interior second-growth logs, holding a high grading standard, and remanufacturing patternstock on site.
We’re a non-tenured mill, which means our entire fibre supply comes from the open market and is chosen for quality, not allotted. It’s also kept us one of Enderby’s longstanding employers, and a part of the community here for four decades.
- 1984
The mill is built beside the Shuswap River just outside Enderby by William Poggemoeller — founded on one species, Western Red Cedar.
- 1985
William’s son Larry takes over, expanding and modernizing the operation.
- 2020
William’s grandson Cory and his wife Benita become the owners, carrying the mill into its third generation. Cory came up through Richwood, the remanufacturing line on the mill site.
- 2025
North Enderby Timber marks its 40th anniversary — four decades of milling cedar in the North Okanagan.
About the cedar
Western Red Cedar — Thuja plicata.
A member of the cypress family, Western Red Cedar is native to the west coast of Canada and the United States. It grows where the climate is mild and the season long, thriving on moist sites — and it’s exactly those conditions that give cedar its remarkable resistance to disease and decay.
-
Naturally durable
Cedar’s own preservative oils help it resist decay and insects without chemical treatment.
-
Dimensionally stable
It lies flat and holds its shape, with less cupping and warping than most softwoods.
-
Light & workable
Easy to cut, fasten, and finish — and light to handle on site.
-
Aromatic & insulating
The scent cedar is known for, plus natural thermal and acoustic insulating properties.
Where it comes from
Open-market logs, chosen for quality.
As a non-tenured mill, our whole fibre supply comes from the open market — picked for the small knots and bright grain that set interior cedar apart.
